Avocado is used more as a vegetable than as a fruit. To open it, cut the fruit in half lengthwise through its center all the way around the pit. Then twist the two halves of the avocado until one side breaks off from the pit. Its taste is not sweet, which is why can combine with many dishes. It can be eaten out of hand, slightly cooked or pureed. Guacamole dip is made by avocado mashed flesh with pepper, onion, spices, tomato and lemon juice. Since 1986 is annually held the AvoFest in Carpinteria (California), a festival dedicated to avocados. During its three-day-long the festival welcomes more than 100.000 people. Admission to the festival is completely free where you can find many activities related to avocado and several stages with live music. The festival is also known for having the world’s largest vat of guacamole.

The fruit has Central American origin, concretely from Mexico. The main producers are the USA, Mexico, Brazil, Dominican Republic and Colombia.
